Buying & selling safely
The marketplace connects buyers and sellers; it does not inspect, test or certify materials, and it does not verify anyone's roofing licence. Used roofing materials carry real risk - these checks help you decide what a licensed roofer needs to verify before anything goes back on a roof.
Inspect the material
- •Match the material, profile and colour to the listing. Ask for clear photos of the profile cross-section, any corrosion, denting, cracking or delamination, and the base metal thickness or tile stamp if visible.
- •Reclaimed tiles are the anchor of this market and the hardest to verify from a photo alone. Ask for the material, profile name if known, approximate age, and whether the batch is a uniform match or mixed. See our checklist on buying second-hand roof tiles for the full detail.
- •Treat heavy rust-through, cracked or delaminating sheet, and any tile with a hairline crack running through the nail hole as unsuitable for reuse. Never install unknown or unassessed material over a living space without it being checked.
Asbestos: the one hard line
- •Pre-1990 asbestos cement roofing (super six, fibro sheeting, asbestos ridge capping) may not be listed, sold or given away on this site. It is licensed-removal work, not salvage stock, and a listing that appears to be asbestos will be removed.
- •If you are unsure whether material from an older home is asbestos, get it assessed by a licensed asbestos assessor before buying, selling or removing it. When in doubt, leave it out.
- •Installing, re-flashing or working on a roof at height is licensed roofing or roof plumbing work in every state. Buying a material here does not entitle you to install it yourself if that work requires a licensed trade.
Pay and collect carefully
- •Inspect before paying where practical. For a large lot of tiles, a pallet of sheet or bulky gear, agree in writing what is included and who loads, transports and handles it, since tiles and sheet are heavy and easy to damage in transit.
- •Never pay a deposit because a stranger creates urgency. Avoid gift cards, cryptocurrency and international transfer requests.
- •Keep the listing, messages, receipt and photos of the material and quantity. Business and trade sellers may owe consumer guarantees that do not usually apply to a one-off private sale.
Storm chasers and unlicensed work
- •After a storm or hail event, doorknocking operators sometimes pressure homeowners to sign a same-day contract citing a supposed insurance deadline. A genuine insurer does not require this. Get a written quote and check the roofer's licence before you sign anything.
- •Confirm a roofer's licence and public liability insurance with your state regulator before work starts. Roof plumbing and roof tiling are frequently separate licence classes, so check the class of work matches the job.
- •The site verifies nothing. Listings are seller-supplied and neither Roofing Marketplace nor NearMe inspects, tests or certifies any item, business or licence. If an item appears to be asbestos, is illegally obtained, or a business is misrepresenting its licence, report the listing.
Use a licensed roofer for the work
Roofing and roof plumbing licensing is state-based, run through each state's building or fair trading regulator. Search the register by name or licence number before you agree to anything, and confirm which class of work (roof plumbing, roof tiling, general building) the licence covers, since metal roofing and tiling are often separate classes.
Confirm a contractor's licence and current public liability insurance with your state regulator before work starts, and get an asbestos assessment before any pre-1990 roof is disturbed.
